If you have lost your job or been laid off, then there are a couple of things you need to do. We will now take a look at some of the most important things that you should do.
Accept Your Emotions
After you’ve lost your job, you may find yourself dealing with a lot of different emotions such as extreme joy due to being free of a set routine, stress, and panic because you’ve just gotten your last paycheck, anger due to your loyalty, and commitment to the company, etc.
You should not get stuck in any of these emotions and understand that feeling these emotions is quite normal. But, once you have accepted your emotions, you need to move on and look at your future. This may seem like tough love, but it is very important.
For me, when I was laid off twice, a lot of my peers were also laid off as well. There was a lot of truth to the saying that misery loves company. We all formed a support group where we complained to one another, talked about future jobs, and motivated one another as well.
So, if you find that you’re really struggling with your job loss, it is a great idea to speak to a professional or even join a group. This can provide a lot of encouragement and comfort that can help you to deal with all your stressful emotions.
I got a lot of great support from my group and actually got lots of leads and resume shares to HR departments. There were many people who were eager to help. So, in the end, I felt happy that I lost my job no matter how I felt in the beginning.
Important tip: When you are talking about what happened with your job, you should focus on your next steps a lot more than the events that occurred. So, for example, if you’re sad about your lost job because you really enjoyed working with customers, then you should look for another role where you get to also work with customers. Focus on what you want as opposed to indicating how your past job and boss had problems with their company or didn’t know to handle their business and that now you are struggling financially. Develop A Budget To Get Your Finances In Order
It can be awkward to talk about money, however, the more you know, the more power you have. So, you need to know exactly how much cash you have available so that you don’t get more in debt.
You will have to look at the difference between your lost monthly income and the money coming in from severance or unemployment to determine what you need to adjust financially in your life. This will determine the size of the changes you’ll have to make. It is a great idea to develop a budget worksheet so that you can become more organized.
When I had to stop and take a magnifying glass to my finances, I quickly figured out that I needed to make changes. So, I started small by cutting down expenses by eating at home, doing exercise in my home as opposed to gym classes, reading books as opposed to Netflix, etc. By doing this, it helped me to take control over a bad situation and ensure it didn’t get worse. Also, it provided a lot of motivation so that I could quickly get a new job.
Work On Your Personal Development
It may seem like a bad idea to spend money when you don’t have an income, however, keep in mind that you do need to invest in yourself.
It is a good idea to enroll in at least one class that will help you to become more marketable. Of course, make sure that you can afford it. Personally, I went to a few writing workshops that improved my skills and increased my self-esteem. These helped me to get out of bed and put myself out there.
You should also look into improving your resume and even getting help from a career coach. It will cost money, however, it is an investment that will pay off once you start getting interviews.
